Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs

It is now understood that people with chronic back pain need to keep physically active, learn to improve posture, address emotional issues and stress triggers. It is therefore recognised that back pain management requires a bio-psycho-social approach that yoga can offer within one unique treatment package.

Between 2006 and 2011 the University of York’s Department of Health Sciences led the world’s most significant yoga research study which proved that yoga can significantly improve back function when compared to usual care. The “Annals of Internal Medicine” Journal wrote in November 2011 that “yoga should now be recommended as a safe and effective treatment for chronic low back pain”. The randomised controlled trial, which was funded by Arthritis UK, was based on a 12-week specialised yoga programme. Four years after completing the initial course, 100% of trial participants (who were phoned randomly for media purposes) were still benefiting from the yoga. In November 2016 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines mentioned that group mind-body exercise such as yoga should be recommended as a first step to managing low back pain with or without sciatica. Public Health England specifically recommends this 'Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs' course .

Emanuela has been trained to teach this 12-week specialised yoga programme for Healthy Lower Backs. The exercises are all gentle, safe and effective. They are in fact an ideal foundation for newcomers to yoga, even if you only have occasional back pain, as you will learn the basics of most aspects of yoga and you will be taught how to practise simple yoga at home. In addition, owing to its focus on pelvic realignment, postural correction, gentle stretching, strengthening and relaxation, it is also recommended to postnatal women.

What Our Yoga Practitioners Say

"I just want to say a big thank you for the Yoga for Healthy Lower Back course. It has been very practical and my lower back pain has reduced by at least 80% as a result of the course.  I am sleeping better and sitting at the desk working through the day has become less challenging. All in all I would recommend the course to anyone who has lower back pain."

"I decided to attend Emanuela's lower back course because I have suffered from lower back pain ever since out eldest son was born more than 26 years ago.  It comes back each time when I make movements that are not correct or spend doing physical tasks that my body is not used to.  I learned so much.  I now know which exercises to do when I do get back ache and within a couple of days it is now gone; it used to be 14 days in the past.  My back is stronger and I know what to do.  I can highly recommend the course and together with the yoga exercises I hope to reduce my back pain forever. Thank you Emanuela."

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the course and that was largely due to your personality and the relaxed atmosphere that you created during the classes. My motivation for joining the class was purely physical, to protect and strengthen my lower back, but it has proved to be an eye opener as to the mental benefits that yoga offers too. The almost “out of body” sensation that I felt during savasana was something I’ve never experienced ... Thank you once again for your warmth and patience. Thank you for introducing me to yoga."
